Having a job in high school is not always a first option for some students, but as college tuition increases, so does the burden of paying for college.

There are, however, internship opportunities, scholarships, and student loans that can help students get out of debt in a shorter amount of time.

There are many advantages and disadvantages to having a part-time job that can affect students in numerous ways.

One advantage is that working develops job-related skills that can contribute to a person entering college.

Alie Gibson has been working at Subway since summer break and finds working to be challenging at times but also beneficial.

“I don’t get a lot of spare time after school and I can work really late as well,” Gibson said. “I make sure I take time during the weekend to study and do my homework and I ask not to work on Thursdays so I can study for test on Fridays.”

With the many pros to having a job such as working with money and working with other people, studies from the University of Concordia, show that 22.3% of high school students work and unemployment has shrank from 11.7% to 10.1% since 2014. Studies also show that working more than 15 to 20 hours a week can decrease in a persons academic performance too.

If you want to work or already have a job it’s important to stay organized as possible and stay productive on your own spare time.

Having a job can be great as long as you can manage your time wisely between school and work.
